Join us for NECKSNAP Magazine’s Inaugural Reading at Flyleaf Books! Hear from some of the talented writers featured in the latest issue of NECKSNAP Magazine, connect with fellow horror lovers, and support emerging voices in the literary world. Free and open to all ages.*
Flyleaf itself will be open until 8pm. The reading will last one hour, so come and mingle before or after the event and pick up any books or goodies you may want while you’re there. We will also have exclusive sticker packs for sale!
Join us for an evening celebrating the local literary community and all things spooky – we’re halfway to Halloween, after all!

Meet the readers

Jes Malitoris is a nonbinary horror and dark fantasy author from Durham, NC. You can find xer short fiction in Bewildering Stories, NECKSNAP Magazine, Cosmic Horror Monthly, The Crawling Moon: Queer Tales of Inescapable Dread (Neon Hemlock, 2024), and very soon in The Skull & Laurel. When not hunched in xer writer’s cave, you can find Jes cursing at xer latest knitting project or talking to xer garden. // Jes was a contributor to Issue 0 of NECKSNAP Magazine with xer story, “Foreign Body.” Xey are now a fiction editor & event coordinator for the magazine.

Mike Romanelli rediscovered his love of writing several years ago and actually began pursuing it. He now has a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from UNCA and a stack of rejection letters. As much as he enjoys writing horror fiction, he typically writes memoir or “horror nonfiction.” He lives in North Carolina with his family and too many pets. // Mike was a contributor to NECKSNAP Magazine‘s Issue One, with his story “How to Win Jeopardy!“

Carly Racklin is a writer, editor, and vulture enthusiast with a passion for the fantastical and visceral. Her work has appeared in Cosmic Horror Monthly, Haven Spec Magazine, The NoSleep Podcast, and more, and her debut novella FUNERAL SONG is forthcoming from Dead Sky Publishing in 2026. Jon Carroll Thomas is a dark fiction writer, event coordinator, and green grocer. He lives in a little log house in Raleigh with his beautiful wife, charming son, and six spoiled rescue cats. He leads the Quails From The Crypt book club through Quail Ridge Books and is a founding member of the North Carolina Horror Writers Association. His recent stories appear in Cosmic Horror Monthly, Carnage House, and in a forthcoming issue of Chthonic Matter Quarterly.
